rg6 quad connector woes

Is there some trick to putting connectors on RG6 Quad? I bought a Philips compression tool and connectors at Lowes. 10 connectors in the kit. Eight got screwed up. The instructions say to cut back the "outer jacket" 1/2". Unless I cut back the outer jacket and the first layer of braid and foil, the connector cannot be forced in far enough for the thing to make up.

Am I missing something?
