D-wife and I had almost as much of a revelatory experience as you did (see link below).
I was surprised not only that the quality of music still exists, but the relative fidelity of our local NPR station is just as I remember most NPR stations sounding- clean, clear, minimal (but still existant) compressing/limiting, and amazingly good, natural sounding presentation that doesn't blast you out of the room when the music is over!
