You mention the volume is really weak.Is this in both channels or just the MPX channel? If it's in both,you need to need to disable the mpx by removing the B+ wire that feeds it..I have repaired over 31 of these units and the most common thing to fail are the opto couplers or a few caps. You don't need the need the MPX to get sound thru either channel so lets disable it to see it loads the audio.
