Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

RE: Any idea what this tuner is worth?...

These are rather rare compared to the s3000 fm only version. This unit looks pretty good save for the slight paint wear above the left control right on the edge.

Sherwood knew how to make great gear but does not quite get the press of the likes of Fisher and Scott. They produced some of the earliest mpx units for radio transmission giving them a heads up in designing the mpx units in the tuners.

The sensitivity of the S2300 is not quite as good as the S3000 from the published specs but, very close. Soundwise, they kich butt against much more expensive tuners. A big plus is that Sherwood made their own cans rather then using the Miller cans most used that today tend to be quite fragile so, alignment is less fragile.

I used a S3000 for some time and enjoyed the sound as much as the Mc MR77. I currently am using the SS version, the S3300 and do not find it wanting at all. In fact, I have 2 of the SS versions.

If local, definitely you should go give a look and listen. Expect posibly some recapping and an algnment as usual due to their age. Be forewarned, if you get it, it probably wil not be too long before you start looking for the matching S5000 or S5500 tube amp as they just seem to go together so naturally.

In today's market, probably the best bang you can spend for tubes and high quality gear designed and made by engineers without the accountants getting involved.
