My experience with most modern construction is that it plays havoc with both AM and FM reception - they're pretty much big ol' Faraday cages.

You can test this by driving your Explorer into your office, parking it in the same spot normally occupied by your desk, and evaluating the reception ;-)

In seriousness - the idea of a tuned, (and in fact, even a tuned, directional) antenna for a single station is a perfectly reasonable one. Since it's at the high frequency end of the band, it won't even need to be too large.
