Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

RE: 10.7 mHz Discriminator Transformer Repair/Replacement

Joe,

The reason the cap is referred to as a "gimmick" is that it was an impromptu component adjusted on the spot for neutralization purpose. So even if you could find another there's absolutely no reason that it should function as desired in your machine - but if you're lucky it will. The one you described was probably clipped or ground to length/capacitance during final set up to the machine before it left the factory and more likely or not even measured at the time. As long as it functioned that was sufficient. So what you need to do is get the tuner to a repair shop equipped to do the proper alignment and set up - without the tools you'll never know whether it's in spec or not. Think about it sorta like someone balancing a tire who doesn't have fractional weights and clips the end off one and keeps nibbling until balance is achieved - the actual weight isn't measured but the tire doesn't wobble at speed.

"Monoblocks" = "monoblockheads" - it's "monaural amplifier"; "power output tubes" not "power tubes" & "patch cords" not "interconnects!" "Passive preamp(lifier) is oxymoronic!
