Cleantime, thanks for clearing that up for me. Somewhere, I had read that transformer type baluns presented no significant loss. But don't all baluns use transformers? As you can see, I just started looking into this stuff, so confusion reigns.
Timothy, thanks for the links. I had poked around a little on those sites before -- lots of great info. Unfortunately, I'm well past the mere onset of senility, so far more info than I can absorb in one sitting. I did go through it, but passed over the calculations and other weighty parts.
I am especially interested in the homemade rhombic. As it happens, the long side of my current dwelling points straight at Manhattan, home to the majority of local stations. It should be a simple matter to run the wire in the attic.
**** As for the balun - I'm using one from Radio Shack. Are there better brands of quality, low-loss baluns that accept 300 Ohm spades and output into 75 Ohm F-type connectors?
