Do some research. There are quite a few ways to get better FM reception and many of them are listed here. These include units/solutions for indoor only antennas too.
Meantime, I do use a Radio Shack TV/FM coax type amplifier with my FM specific Yagi (a RS item they no longer carry), and it really helps.
Be aware that any of these type amps only amplify the signal you're getting. So if it's a clean signal, but weak, you get a stronger clean signal. But if it's a crappy signal, not simply weak, you get a louder crappier signal!
If you are going to use the old T (split wire?) antenna, the 300 Ohm kind that comes with virtually any FM radio unit, then consider a couple of things:
1) the arms (not the "tail") wires need to be very straight;
2) if you mount one vertically instead of horizontally it becomes omnidirectional.
The latter may help in some areas.
I don't do AM (even in the car) so cannot help you there.
If you want to know the real scoop on FM antennas, check out Brian Beezley's FM antenna page. About the best information around.
