The ringing and waveform distortion you see in your square wave tests are mostly due to non-flat phase and frequency response. They don't indicate harmonic or intermodulation distortion and may very well be inaudible, regardless of how ugly they look. The ear is remarkably insensitive to phase distortion.An oscilloscope is a very, very useful instrument (you have a nice one, by the way. I have an HP54600A, although I keep a Tektronix 475A on the bench), but not very good for distortion measurements.
