The remarks Tre' made about the O/P levels of CDPs is exactly why people build amps that can be driven to full power production, without active line stage gain.

Your thinking about overall gain structure is spot on. S/N performance suffers, when lots of resistive attenuation is used to adjust overall gain. FWIW, I have a 6SN7 line stage design built around a resistively loaded LTP, that does not invert signal polarity and has a net gain of about 8X. Still some "padding" might be needed, if the power amp is sensitive.
