That should work, but

The resistor should have its body as close to the socket as possible, with the shortest lead length between the resistor body and the pin of the tube as you can get. The 10K would be more effective FWIW.

Also, the ground of the pot and the ground of the cathode resistor should be the same point (which should not be the chassis); from there then use a common wire to the circuit ground.
