You are probably using the potentiometer as both the grid resistor and the grid stop resistor for the amp. Put a 10K carbon comp resistor on the grid of the input tube right at the socket (short lead length). Put a 200K resistor to ground as a real grid resistor. This should fix it. There is obviously an interaction with the volume pot
