RE: 417A linestage

Isn't there another disadvantage to this circuit, other than what has already been mentioned? If the two tubes are not well matched when amplifying complex wave forms (which is likely) this alone could generate distortion. Also, to ameliorate the issue of too much gain, I would think that a 5687 would be better:
(1) A single envelope contains two triodes
(2) Mu is much lower = less gain.
(3) Rp is comparable.
(4) Output impedance would be in the same ballpark, obviating the need for a cathode-follower, as this circuit also does.
(5) Possibly less tendency to oscillate, but you would still use grid-stoppers.

417A/5842 is nice for a phono input, IMO, but not so much for linestage.
