Sure doesn't look like ebony (looks more like rosewood, or maybe padauk). Regardless, I'd be concerned with the structural integrity as butt joints are not particularly strong in the first place, particularly since the wood is so thin. And, if that is indeed ebony, it is an oily wood that most glue does not adhere to well.
