gets rid of so much unnecessary complexity in the posted circuit, it's almost a no-brainer, IMO. If you want to stay away from solid state, then consider the 6BX7/6BL7, as per TK, instead of the transistor. Or you could use a higher Gm/lower Rp 9-pin miniature as the driver (if you've no room for an octal socket), like an ECC99 or 7119, etc.
