" I also used the 15% step that has been discussed here and elsewhere by a few different people, but I confess that I am unsure of the extent step response results translate to the real-world"
Quite a while ago I changed the PSU of the output stage of a 300B SET amp from CLC (of the order of 10uF/10H/300uF) to a cLCLC. I modelled this in PSUD for a fast clean step response. The last cap was the largest and was 30uF if I remember.
The result was *much* better leading edges and dynamic response; faster, cleaner. Even a Naim fan friend took note and approved.
I continue to use cLCLC with results which I like; so for me personally, the step response translates directly and importantly to certain aspects of sound quality. But you have to get it right ... just a tiny bit of overshoot, no oscillation, fast settling time.
