I think they must have been ESL63, despite my earlier post. Google image search shows the ones that look like these are ESL63, and there doesn't appear to be an ESL53. I don't know much about Quad stuff really.
Anyway, it wasn't phase, I would have heard that in two seconds. Mixing shows and doing studio work, you train yourself to hear phase problems immediately.
Nah, it was just brash and thin. Not sure why. The CD player, DA, and amp were all Conrad Johnson, and the speakers were wired up with cable as thick as my thumb. I'm going to have to go back and play with it for a while and see if I can understand why it sounds so horrible. I really am curious. I've heard better sound at Radio Shack.
