I wonder if assembly without glue is specific to certain tube types. I have some NOS 6SL7s that need new bases, but they're definitely glued. The bases are cracked from age, and I can see high temp adhesive through the cracks. Guess I won't know about the other tubes until I try to remove the seven pin bases. If the adhesive is only around the top like you say (or none at all), the work will go pretty quick.
