While I agree with you in general, I also know you have to learn how to crawl before you can walk. I am currently working my way through an old version of an NEC course on basic electronics, and I just got a electronics lab from radio shack to help me along. They will be my projects for this winter.
I'll bet you still use a gps or a road map when you travel some place out of state, even though you know your starting point and your destination. You could take every side road you come too and see where it leads, but it might take you longer than you'd like to get there.
