Cathode bias requires constant cathode current: class A. Peak current in either tube is twice the idle current - as one approaches peak, the other approaches cutoff.

Fixed bias allows biasing the tubes at less than half the peak current - getting more power from a pair and/or improving tube life. Distortion in class AB is likely to be more, but depends on the particular tube and operating point.
