RE: recommended replacement for 1N4007 diodes..

UF4007s are drop in replacements for 1N4007s, which go a very long way towards lowering the amount of switching noise produced. Snub the diodes with 0.01 μF. HIGH WVDC caps. to lower the noise level further.

UF5408s are quite similar to UF4007s. The difference is 3 A. vs. 1 A.

High PIV Schottky diodes are "noiseless", but the TO220 cases may create mechanical problems in an existing unit.

BTW, a medium PIV Schottky diode in a "barrel" style case might be just what the doctor ordered, for service in the bias supply.
