...A week or two ago there was a discussion regarding which lead of a K40 was attached to the outside foil. Someone stated that the foil lead was directly correlated with the label on the cap: it was either on the right or left side as the cap label was oriented in normal reading position (forget exactly which). Curious, I pulled 10-0.1uF/400V caps from my stash, all same date code and checked them electrically. Surprisingly, 5 had the foil on the "right" lead and 5 on the "left". IOW, zero correlation betw label orientation and outside foil lead. IOW, totally random.
While 10 caps is a small sample, the message is clear to me: for K40 caps, if orientation of the foil lead is important, it must be determined by measurement and not visually.
