RE: Where does the current come from?

Well said, Triode_Kingdom. Voltage measurements, including the audio signal ripple at the output of power supply, should be capable of revealing all differences between different supply configurations.

Since the power supply is in the audio path, and since the audio path is principally through the output capacitor in the supply, then it is certainly believable that a lower value of output capacitor could provide an audible coloration relative to a higher value. Leaving aside the possibility of more hum in the lower-value case, it could also, for example, lead to an attenuation at bass frequencies. All such effects would be revealed by putting an oscilloscope on the output of the power supply, and looking at the mains ripple and the audio ripple. It is hard to see how there could be any desirable quality that would result from a lower value of capacitor.

Anecdotal claims about a "greater musicality" from a lower-valued output capacitor are rather too vague as they stand. Can the claims of a perceived difference in sound quality be substantiated by rigorous double-blind listening comparisons? If yes, then they must be capable of being correlated with detailed measurements of ripple voltages, etc., which would reveal exactly what is going on. The obvious conclusion would then have to be that the listener actually preferred, and found more "musical," the specific degradation of sound quality that resulted from the lower value of capacitor. But in the absence of reliable and repeatable confirmation from double-blind testing, it cannot be ruled out that the supposed differences are the result of observer bias, with the human brain hearing what it wants to hear.
