RE: Does an individual power tranny for driver stage improve

Deathtube 667,

This that you post is what I have found also!

The chokes need to be 10-20 Ohms, and the power trannie needs to be about 500 VA or more. Hammond's Classic 300 series now has a high-end range of center tapped power transformers that are 500 mA. (and higher) rated, E-I core, about $250 each. THEY are NICE to use, just change the high voltage associated lead outs to double Kimber Kable TCSS for SE builds.

IF the amp is NOT a DC amp, the use of a separate front end supply (for a no-feedback-loop amp) is ALWAYS heard by me as having positive attributes and "sounding more refined",.... my BEST description.

However, separate supplies alone will NOT have the desired effect sought by the original poster, of "maximized bass slam and bass transient / dynamic capability" - unless the low DCR numbers are now present in BOTH supplies.

A "separate supplies amp", low in DCR, quickly gets bigger and heavier. Our chokes in 2012 are handily all under two pounds, but the power trannies get heavy.

Overall, if seeking the nicest possible "dynamic contrasting and best bass", it would be preferable to have a single optimized low DCR supply amp, rather than using TWO higher DCR supplies.

In a DC amp, it is very different ..... and becomes counter-intuitive. Separate low DCR supplies do not work as well or sound the best. Surprise !!! It needs a SINGLE low DCR supply to sound its very best, and play dynamically "together". I have built DC amps both ways and surprisingly to me, the single supply handily wins-out to my ears!!

Hope this answer assists some builders.
