I figured that out when I was about 8-9 years old. What a great idea. An EE friend of the family set me straight - mechanical friction, electrical resistance, etc. But he also brought up another really good physics lesson for me at an early age.
Let's say you do solve the mechanical and electrical friction problem. The MG set will sit there and spin forever. Great, but how will you tap any power form it? Any load, mechanical or electrical will kill it.
Can't get more energy than you put in. Even if you could get it to 100% efficiency.
