There's a million ways you see this at work.
Back in the Steam Power Era, a bunch of guys developed this stuff called
Thermodynamics. It was ugly stuff - a big mess of partial differential equations that relate pressure, temperature and volume to these bizarre abstract ideas like Enthalpy, Entropy, Helmholtz free energy, Gibbs free energy etc. etc. Really why they created this elaborate mess of PDE's was because they couldnt figure out WHY heat cant be entirely converted to work, and further - why various changes in volume and temperature couldn't be reversible.
Those guys would have just been satisfied with 100% conversion of heat to work.. They wouldn't even EXPECT to get free work as it was obvious to an idiot.
Once we got Quantum Mechanics - it became much clearly why we can't get reversibility and why cant squeeze all the available energy out into work... Use gases to do expansion work - you can only use the Translation energy to do things. But the molecule is going to park energy in Rotational and Vibrational modes. There's a limited set of mechanisms to move energy into translation - not all of it can be squeezed out. Ontop of that, some energy is transferred by collisions (conduction / convection) - but quite abit is transferred via radiation.
Ontop of all that, the Universe is expanding !! Which means there is always more volume for energy states to spread themselves out, and lower probability of transfer by radiation or collision.
The Free Energy / Nikola Tesla Secrets Worshippers scare me... Most of them are Ron Paul supporters. They'd all do better taking some college classes in Physics and Economics rather than holding beliefs about mythical scientists who discovered Secrets of Free Stuff and were persecuted by the Illuminati.
