Jean Hiraga, the French tube guru, wrote a seminal book on "Amplis a lampes" back in 1977.
He had a whole chapter devoted to bias.
The degenerative effect at the cathode is clearly explained in this page;

Look for the paragraph that starts with automatic Biasing (self bias).
Then read carefully the paragraph that starts wih: This system has a drawback.
Think in terms of local degeneration, not loop feedback.
