Need a simple linestage for iPod into vintage SS receiver tape input

I gave my son a vintage solid state Onkyo receiver (early 1970s?) that has no "aux" input, only phono and tape. We tried running his iPod from its only output (headphone) to the tape input on the Onkyo, and had to turn the iPod up nearly all the way, while also cranking the Onkyo nearly three-quarters of the way up to get decent volume. If he then switches back to, say, FM or phono, the volume mismatch is huge.

I'd like to bump up the iPod output signal with a very simple linestage pre-amp, but I'm not sure of the iPod's output impedance or the Onkyo's likely input impedance on the tape input.

There are no selectors on this receiver for different tape types. Can I assume the tape input is a straight shot with no equalization?

Any suggestions for a simple circuit that might work? I would need some advice to tweak for the right input and output impedances if they are not reasonably standard. Also, I don't have any experience with tape players for that era, so I don't know what input level the tape in would be expecting.

This can be mid-fi or a little better, and doesn't need to be complicated -- it really wouldn't need a volume control either. Relatively inexpensive would also be nice.

Thanks,
Jeff
