Class A distortion vs Class AB noise

I'm investigating voltage controlled amplifiers for use in analogue oscillators and I came across an interesting comment in the data sheet for the AD SSM2018T:

"The SSM2018T combines the low noise of class AB topologies with the low distortion of Class A circuits". I'm assuming that AD's design engineers know more than I do on the subject.

Obviously the chip runs on transistors but my question is - Does this apply equally to V/T circuits? Is a Class AB circuit inherently quieter than the equivalent Class A circuit. If so, why?
