Not much "bad" will happen if you give it a go as a choke input. Depending on the current drawn, you may or may not meet critical inductance and if you do hit critical and are drawing 500ma you will only have room for 20VAC at the ripple frequency.
put the primary of a dedicated PT on a variac and dial up the voltage to what you desire and give it a listen, then do the math to see how you are operating the device. Now you can adjust the "mode of operation" and listen again to see if you hear a difference. As long as the choke isn't shaking like the bed from Poltergeist or getting as hot as... (insert bad pun here)... you aren't going to hurt anything and the sound will tell you if you are heading in the right direction or not.
