Yeah-- I agree. Ditto on the Neumanns. You'll notice I'm still building an all-out S.E.T. amp.Many sand devices aren't linear. But some CHIPS are really getting there.
Linearity is often misunderstood. For instance, look at the non-linearity of the 12AU7 charts. Pretty bad. But, then PULL OUT a straight-line section of an operating line that's OK for tube behavior and long-life, and operate the tube so that the linear excursions don't ever leave the linear path you have chosen.... in the middle of a "non-linear" longer path.
Now, although the tube is non-linear across its entire operating range, you're not using all of that range-- just the linear portion you have chosen.
Now, your CIRCUIT can perform linearly, using a device with poor overall linearity.
I really used to hate that tube until I learned how it could be used. Kevin Hayes at V.A.C. knew that it could actually perform very well-- if you only used its linear portions.
I never understood that until I encountered something of his that used a 12AU7 and whacked all the competition out of the Ball Park---.
