I'm just responding to the statement that "More active devices generate more harmonic/phase distoriton", which is only true in a poorly-designed device. If a stage only acts to increase the distortion without other purpose, then the engineer responsible should re-think his methods -- so if you achieve good results with a single stage, that's a good thing. But sometimes a 10x gain stage followed by a 10x gain stage will have lower distortion than a 100x gain stage. My example of distortion cancellation is without NFB. It's why people use 12AT7s as drivers in single-ended amps -- the added 2nd HD can be tuned to cancel with the 2nd HD produced by the output tube. A friend of mine has achieved great results using lousy driver tubes in his single ended amp for this reason -- measurably and audibly. Distortion after the first stage was much higher than that coming out of the second stage. This technique has been promoted since the early days of hi-fi ... Of course, it's much easier to tune an amp this way by measuring it than by listening to it.
