Careful, as that's often untrue. It is possible to cascade two more-linear devices to get lower distortion than with a single less-linear device. Alternatively, you can cascade two non-linear devices with complementary nonlinearity, such that the resulting distortion of the first stage is canceled by the second. Sometimes simpler isn't better -- but you can easily confirm with a scope and distortion meter.
