hey-Hey!!!,
Just because one cannot meausre or quantify the quantities that make an amp sound good does not mean that they don't exist, or that they cannot be measured. With that in hand, the idea that good engineering won't be able to direct you to an amp that sounds good reminds me of the Tucker Torpedo sales literature.
Lastly, good engineering *IS* Art. There is only the different categories of the Art, Impressionistic, Mechanical Engineering, Music, etc. The only conclusion I come to when somebody says that Engineering skills are not needed, or worse yet are a hinderance to building excellent amps is that they truly have no clue to what engineers do, or what drives the best of them.
