A word from the recording, studio, theatre, and scoring studio playback world--Unless you are building the best possible vacuum tube systems, using the lowest-possible value chokes, capacitors, with wiring and layout losses absolutely totally minimized-- if you're not doing all of this--- then, somebody is going to beat you very badly with GOOD Solid-State.
I.C.s are built using TINY and SHORT circuit paths. The sound quality is really a product of the power supply quality to the chip, and the metallurgy, materials and layout used within the chip.
For Moving Coil phono cartridges especially-- if you think you can beat the BEST I.C.s on this kind of miniscule output-- I'd sure like to see it!
I like to see vacuum tubes for MM carts, and NEVER for M.C. carts. The lines blur only where each implementation is mediocre-- as nearly all equipment is. But, when the BEST POSSIBLE implementation is done for each kind of system, on Moving-Coils, it's time to get out the chips.
If you haven't experienced what really good chips can do, it's time to get introduced! I think you'll have a lot of fun.
