It sounds to me like a ground loop issue with your source that is broken using a transformer passive. How did you treat the signal ground? What is it in relation to your earth ground? You generally only want a single point in your system where signal ground is tied to earth ground, preferably at the source. All the other signal grounds should float. Also, you want your PS ground separate, grounded at a single point to the signal ground at the input jack. The chassis should be earth grounded for safety. I like to have a ceramic cap of a decent value (say between 0.05 to 0.1 uF) between the input jack and chassis to act as an RF ground.

All I can say, is that an Aikido preamp should be dead quiet, so if you are getting hum, you have a wiring problem that you will need to sort out. These things are pretty annoying, but you always learn something from the process of troubleshooting.
