Aikido pre amp

Hello, I have built the nine pin Aikido pre . It works fine if I connect the output to a Passive pre that uses transformers. If I try to attenuate before the signal get to the Aikido all I get is a loud hum. I have tried potentiometers, stepped attenuation and even transformer attenuation. Any ideas?
