I run a direct coupled Op Amp RIAA and line stage preamp at home c-J, and it is absolutely awesome! The ICs are not new ones, twenty year old ones, but its very hard to fault this preamp - in any way.

Jim Dowdy heard it last month, and we both had a whole lot of fun listening.

So, I can tell you from my experience, YES, it can be done, very well, if well engineered and fully developed by good listeners who know what live, unamplified music sounds like..
