The 300b was made to be very linear for a specific reason - that is carrying frequency multiplexed telephone calls. That's right telephone signals.
Here again is where electrical engineering comes in. Distortion in an audio amplifier is typically a bad thing but tolerable to a certian degree. 5% second haronic distortion at some frequencies may even sound pleasent but it is hardly an accurate reproduction of the input signal.
Now when we send frequency multiplexed signals through an amplifier and there is too much distortion, we get back crossed signals on demodulation. That's not tolerable even for a lowley 300-3khz bandwidth phone signal. hence Bell Labs design a tube in the 1930s to address this specific problem.
The 300b was never intended to be a HiFi audio tube!
