Harmonic distortion is caused within a tube when the grid lines on the plate curves are not evenly spaced. If you draw a load line across these triode strapped 6L6 curves you will see that the grid lines to the right are bunched up compared to the spacing of the grid line to the left.The plate voltage will change more (go down) as the grid is driven more positive than the plate voltage will go up when the grid is driven more negative.
This causes an asymmetrical waveform. We call that "harmonic distortion".
Now look at the next post and see that the grid lines in the 300b plate curves are MUCH more evenly spaced. Thus there will be much less harmonic distortion..
BTW the 2a3 is even better and the 45 better still.
