Sure, switchers can be good alternate. And, reliability is better than ever now. Just look up the manufactures ripple output specs that are usually around 30mv or less for the better designs. I would add a simple filter on the output.

Of course, a linear type & larger PS would have about 8mv ripple or less for the better designs.
