There is another thing you need for your el-cheapo test bench. I use a lot of digital equipment, but certain things it cannot do, and some of it is easily "fooled" by rapid, small voltage or current changes. You also need good analog equipment.
Start with the Trusty old Simpson "260".. a great old MM. Everytime your digital stuff gets "fooled" or goes unstable, this oldie will save your day.
It can also be the "EXTRA" horse in your stable when you are measuring several things at once on an operating circuit.
