If you look back at the articles by Jung and Marsh on capacitor selection, they felt that polystyrene was even better than polypropylene, and second only to teflon as a dielectric. The disadvantages of polystyrene were size (much bigger than polypropylene caps of the same value) and sensitivity to heat (i.e. being damaged by soldering irons or even touching a hot vaccum tube by accident).
