I have used both digital and analog scopes, but prefer an analog scope for audio work. I would say that the minimum required bandwidth is 40 MHz with a 5 mV/div sensitivity. Dual trace is pretty much essential.
I have had very bad luck buying oscilloscopes off of Ebay. The first (a Tektronix dual trace) worked marginally for a few hours and then died. It cost over $15 to dispose of the damn thing. The second, a HP180D (Dual trace 50 MHz) was DOA. I saved the plug ins (which did work) and purchased a refurbished HP180D mainframe from Valuetronics. By the way, Valuetronics is a used instrument seller that is reliable and reasonably priced. For your $400 - $600 budget, you could also get a Tektronix 7000 series with enough plugs ins to keep you happy.
For probes, try DigiKey. I have the P200B (200 Mhz X10). The x1 probes have considerable capacitance (about 50 pF), which can screw up your measurements. The x1/x10 switchable probes are also a good choice, although more costly if you want 200 MHz bandwidth.
