When I simulate things with PSUD or LTSPice I see that the large peaks in current only occur at start-up. Even with 100uF or so after a 274B the current limits of a 274B are respected.
No, the surge is really just after startup. A limiter helps IMHO.
My solution for the problem... Don't switch your amps of and on all the time. Total lifetime of the tubes and most other components will be higher. The sound will be better too, especially if you use BG's.
