Hi, the problem with too high a capacitance straight after the rectifier is that it draws more recharging current each half cycle than the tube was designed to handle. Your thermistor won't really help in this regard.
If you have spare voltage, though, you can add some resistance in series with the leads from the power transformer secondary to the rectifier tube plates. This will increase the DCR of the PS (not always a bad thing, unless you're trying to drive a Clas AB PP amp), but it will also limit the charging current, enabling you to benefit from better smoothing due to the higher capacitance without risking damage to the rectifier.
