Perhaps this will help a bit.... I wouldn't get too discouraged about learning electronics. You will learn fastest and best by ACTING and DOING things. As you do these things, you'll naturally get curious and start reading Morgan Jones, RDH--- and on and on... old Sound Practices, Absolute Sound, Stereophile, Glass Audio, Audio Express and a lot more.

For now, here's what I would think about: (1) If you can do it, start buying and selling ONLY THE BEST audio stuff that you can buy at the price level that you can sell it for later, unless you know it's a long-term keeper. If that's the case, then pay what it costs and get it.

If you chose right, you will NEVER regret that you did it. You'll always possess a reference to later rate your own work by. Start with some of the things that really turned the folks at Absolute Sound, Stereophile, and etc. on. Not the stuff they just reported on-- look for that ONE unit that the reviewer bought or wished he could afford. They get exposed to everything sooner or later-- you're not reviewing the reviewer-- you're looking for that lone standout piece of equipment that he was exposed to and KNEW how good it was-- even if he didn't say so directly. Read between the lines.

Start observing WHY this component is so good. What are its design and execution merits? As you learn from these winners, you'll develop ideas of what you want YOURS to be like.

(2) OR-- just buy the best right now-- say-- on amplifiers, and then devote time to getting the rest of the system right. You'll learn from this too, and can later build what you want yourself. Not only that, but you'll have a handy reference to compare your work to since you bought the best when you started your learning curve.

In any case, there's no substitute for something being done right. By observing the best that others have already done, you'll be very close to "right" when you start building. This will save you a lot of headaches and wasted money in the long run, and will be very musically satisfying.
