The use of a low (heavy) load on a high impedance cartridge can roll-off the highs quite nicely before amplification. Various manufacturers (e.g.Gray Research)sold passive equalization units so that an unused mic input on existing (i.e. designed in 78 era) broadcast consoles could be used when microgroove records and suitable variable reluctance cartridges began to appear in radio stations.
I have gone the opposite way by using relatively light loading (100k - 220k) in my phono pre-amps. Partly to compensate for my "mature" ears and partly for higher level (my amplification has a low-gain structure). I even ran a DL-103 into 220k/channel without step-up for a while!
It would be interesting to try the "old way" sometime.
Brian.
