I agree with the posters saying that the best transformers are hard to beat but IME that’s a very small and generally expensive percentage. In most cases good caps sound better because they don't limit BW, unless your system is overly bright to begin with. By comparison most trannies sound rolled off to my ears.
For a cheaper alternative try a good quality cap followed by a grid choke tuned to resonance at a fairly low frequency (20-30 Hz) and appropriately damped. You'll lose nothing in HF response and can boost your LF response to boot. What you'll hear is a relaxed sound reminiscent of tranny coupling, fuller than RC coupling but losing nothing in the transparency stakes. And it will save you money compared to really good trannies. Best of both worlds in my book.
