I use the K72 or FT-3 Russian teflon caps for coupling, plus transformers when I can get them. A friend and I did an AB test of the teflons versus LL1660 out of a 10Y preamp, and while we felt the teflon cap had a fuller and possibly more lifelike timbre, the transformer was obviously cleaner and more detailed so that got the vote. I'd say about 25% better. But with a cheaper transformer it could have gone the other way. I'd put K40 caps way down the list, so I don't think that's a good comparison as far as what caps can do.
